What the catalogue is

Why that matters more than it sounds

Compare it with the neighbours. Denmark publishes a book and writes the questions somewhere else; ten of its forty-five are unprepared by design and no material covers them. Sweden's test is new and its authority has not published a pass mark. Finland's does not exist yet.

Germany published the answers. The entire examinable set is 310 questions, you can read all of them in a few evenings, and there is no part of the paper that comes from outside them. That changes what preparation is: it is not a matter of studying a subject broadly and hoping, it is a matter of working through a finite list until you are reliable on it.

What the curriculum weights heaviest

The catalogue is a flat list of 310 questions with no chapters. The subject structure sits in the other annex: Anlage 2, the Rahmencurriculum, which is binding for naturalisation courses and allots teaching units to each part. Nobody publishes this as a study plan. It is the closest thing that exists to an official statement of where the weight lies, and it is sitting in an annex to a regulation.

Reading the weighting

Fifty-seven teaching units are examinable, and Modul II takes thirty-three of them. Politics, rights and how disagreement is settled are more than half the course. History and responsibility is thirteen, the largest single module after that, and Mensch und Gesellschaft eleven.

That is not a prediction of how many questions each area gets on your paper, and it should not be read as one. The regulation weights teaching time, not the paper. But it is the authority's own view of what takes the most learning, and if you have three evenings rather than three weeks, it is a better guide than a guess.

Where Belong Germany's questions come from, and what they are not

The app's practice questions are written by Belong Germany from the catalogue's subject areas, grouped under the curriculum's own modules and in its own order. They are not BAMF's questions, the real paper uses the published 310, and ours can contain mistakes. Practice is for finding out which module you have not read properly yet.
