The three Bundesland questions: where they come from and how to find yours

Three of the thirty-three come from the federal state you are registered in, out of a set of ten that is published separately from the other three hundred. Here is how that works and why no national practice bank contains them.

How the state part works

3 of your 33 questions come from your Bundesland's own catalogue.
Each of the sixteen Länder has ten questions, printed as Teil II of Anlage 1 EinbTestV.
The catalogue you actually study is 310 questions: the 300 general ones plus your own state's ten.
Which state counts is the one you are registered in as your primary residence, your Erstwohnsitz.
In the binding curriculum the state part is Modul II Teil 4 and is allotted 6 of the 57 teaching units.
A certificate you already hold stays valid if you move. § 1 Abs. 4 EinbTestV says so in terms.

Ten questions, and you get three of them

This is the best odds anywhere on the paper and almost nobody treats it that way. Three of your thirty-three marks are drawn from a pool of ten questions that you can read in full, for free, in an hour. Nothing else on the test has a ratio like that.

The reason people skip them is that they are not where the rest of the material is. The 300 general questions are what every practice site, every app and every course covers, because they are the same for everyone. The ten are sixteen different sets, so a national product either builds sixteen of everything or leaves them out.

Where to read your state's ten

Two places, both official and both free. BAMF's Online-Testcenter lets you pick your Bundesland and then works through the catalogue interactively, showing the correct answer after each question. BAMF also publishes the whole Gesamtfragenkatalog as a PDF for download, and the state sets are in it.

The regulation itself is the third place. Anlage 1 to the Einbürgerungstestverordnung is the legally binding catalogue, and it is published at gesetze-im-internet.de like any other annex. If you want the source rather than a rendering of it, that is the source.

Belong Germany does not write these, on purpose

The app's chapter list shows Besonderheiten des Bundeslandes greyed out, with no questions behind it and a line saying where the real material is. That is a deliberate choice, not a gap waiting to be filled: the answer depends on which of sixteen states you sit in, and writing generic questions to cover the slot would be teaching you something that is not on your paper. It is also why the app's mock runs 30 questions rather than 33 and reports a score with no pass verdict. 17 out of 33 is the threshold for a paper you have not sat.

Common questions about the state questions

Which Bundesland's questions will I get?

The one where you are registered with your primary residence, your Erstwohnsitz. Not where you were born, not where you work, and not where the test centre is.

What if I move to another Bundesland?

If you have already passed, nothing changes: § 1 Abs. 4 EinbTestV says the certificate continues to apply to the authority that becomes responsible after you move. If you have not sat it yet, your new registered address is what decides which ten questions apply.

Do the three state questions have their own pass mark?

No. There is one threshold on the whole paper, 17 correct out of 33. The state questions count towards it exactly like the other thirty.
