The Einbürgerungstest is the German naturalisation knowledge test. It is sat in German, it asks 33 questions in 60 minutes, and passing it is one of the conditions for German citizenship.

The test is one step. See the whole journey on belonggermany.appTwo from each module of the official curriculum, in the curriculum’s own order and in German as the real paper is set, with an English translation underneath. The correct answer is marked.
What is the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany called?
Which fundamental right is set out in Article 1 of the Basic Law?
Who can ban an unconstitutional party in Germany?
When did Adolf Hitler become Reich Chancellor, with German democracy destroyed thereafter?
What is antisemitism?
Since when has the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany been in force?
What does freedom of opinion mean in Germany?
What may people in Germany do if they disagree with an authority's decision?
What characterised the National Socialist state?
What applies to men and women in Germany?
449questions, drilled module by module in the order the binding curriculum sets them, with a mistakes deck, spaced repetition and a mock at the real paper’s pace: 30 questions in 55 minutes. The mock gives you a score and no pass verdict, because three of the real 33 come from your own Bundesland and those are not ours to write.
Written by Belong Germany from the subject areas of the official catalogue. They are not BAMF’s questions, and the real sitting uses its own.

17 out of 33. The paper has 33 questions, you get 60 minutes, and each question has four options with one correct answer. There is no second threshold and no section you have to pass separately: 17 correct anywhere on the paper is a pass. The rule is in § 1 Abs. 3 of the Einbürgerungstestverordnung.
No. The test is set and sat in German only, and there is no English version. It is a separate requirement from the language requirement, which is German at level B1 of the Common European Framework. Practice questions in English are for study; the paper in front of you will be in German.
From the catalogue for the federal state you are registered in as your primary residence. Each of the sixteen Länder has its own ten questions in Anlage 1 of the Einbürgerungstestverordnung, and three of them appear on your paper. If you move, the certificate you already hold stays valid; it is only the paper you have not sat yet that follows your registered address.
The test costs 25 euro per attempt, a flat fee set in § 2 Abs. 1 EinbTestV. The naturalisation application itself costs 255 euro per person, or 51 euro for a minor child naturalised together with a parent. BAMF says the fee can be reduced or paid in instalments if you earn very little or several children are being naturalised with you.
Not if you hold a German school-leaving certificate, or a degree from a German university in law, social sciences, political science or public administration. You are also exempt if you are under 16, or if illness, disability or age means you cannot meet the requirement. A pass of 17 or more in the Leben in Deutschland test from an integration course counts instead of the Einbürgerungstest.
BAMF marks the papers centrally and issues the certificate, so the wait is not set by the test centre. Rather than publish a turnaround time, BAMF publishes which test date it is currently marking, on its own Einbürgerung page. Through 2026 that has run at roughly two months behind the sitting. Check the date on the day rather than planning on an average.
German citizenship also asks for 5 years of lawful ordinary residence on the standard route, a settled residence status, German at B1, supporting yourself and a clean record, each with its own rules on absences and timing.
